Bike Crashes in Tampa Bay

Bike Safety – Tampa Bay

Pinellas County and Hillsborough County are great places to ride. Pinellas County and Hillsborough County are dangerous places to ride. Is that imaginary or is it based on actual numbers. It’s based on actual numbers.

According to figures from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, for Pinellas County and Hillsborough County for 2019 there were 543 bike crashes in Hillsborough County. 11 of them were fatal. In Pinellas County for 2019 there were 513 bike crashes. 6 of them were fatal. This means Hillsborough and Pinellas combined were averaging 3 bike crashes every day. That is a total of 42 fatal bike crashes in Tampa Bay for 2019—the last year of complete Florida DMV statistics. That is an amazing statistic to understand that 42 of the bike riders on the road last year in Tampa Bay did not make it home. 42 friends, neighbors, family.

If you are a rider like I am you understand that not everyone on the road is so willing to share the road. Pinellas County and Hillsborough are two of the counties in the nation with the worst crash and fatality rates in the Nation, not just Florida.
