Here are considerations when choosing between a large law firm and a small law firm. Large law firms get large by advertising on TV, social media, billboards, etc. What is not apparent about many large law firms is that your case will be handled start-to-finish by a claims handler, not a paralegal, and not an attorney.

A second point is to be aware of how many “cases” are assigned to each person at the law firm. (Ask them.) When we recently interviewed to add on an additional person to our team we interviewed several people looking to leave large law firms. The experience was that many of those employees of large law firms looking to leave were handling at least 200 personal injury cases at one time. One applicant confided that she gets 50 new cases every week.

It is an assembly line. What is not apparent in a big advertiser law firm is the worker can only keep up by using one-size-fits-all cookie cutter computer programs. As one applicant explained to us, every single demand letter to an insurance company put out for an injured client contained essentially the same information, and the same robotic demand for policy limits—regardless of the type of case or the unique aspects of the case. The demand letter was essentially the same for every case and at the end they just demanded the insurer’s policy limits. Here is the problem: This does not go unnoticed by insurance companies that a law firm is just pushing out policy limit demands. It also becomes apparent to insurers that big-advertiser law firms in truth do not have the time to litigate all the claims they have. This can result in the insurer knowing they can hold out, delay, and lowball claims because high volume law firms do not have the time to fight for each claim.
